The NHS categories
- Below 18.5: underweight
- 18.5 to 24.9: healthy weight
- 25 to 29.9: overweight
- 30 or more: obese
For adults from a South Asian, Chinese, other Asian, Middle Eastern, Black African or African-Caribbean background, the NHS uses lower thresholds because health risks start at a slightly lower BMI: 23 to 27.4 is overweight and 27.5 or more is obese. See the Asian BMI chart. The NHS also notes that BMI cannot tell muscle from fat, so a waist measurement helps; try the waist-to-height ratio.

Questions
How do I convert stones to pounds?
Multiply the stones by 14 and add the extra pounds. 11 st 4 lb is 11 × 14 + 4 = 158 lb. One stone is 6.35 kg.
What is a healthy weight in stone for 5 ft 6 in?
For an adult who is 5 ft 6 in, BMI 18.5 to 24.9 is about 8 st 3 lb to 11 st 0 lb.
Does the NHS use different BMI categories?
For most adults the NHS uses the same ranges as the WHO: 18.5 to 24.9 healthy, 25 to 29.9 overweight and 30 or more obese. For people from a South Asian, Chinese, other Asian, Middle Eastern, Black African or African-Caribbean background it uses lower thresholds: 23 to 27.4 is overweight and 27.5 or more is obese.
Why does the table start at under, not at a weight?
There is no lower limit for underweight; any weight below the first healthy value gives a BMI under 18.5.
